Part 1 established quartz as crystalline silicon dioxide and separated mineral varieties from trade names. Part 2 moves into the purple, pink, and iron-rich end of the quartz market: amethyst, rose quartz, lavender quartz, purple rose quartz, pink amethyst, pink amethyst flower agate, hematoid quartz, and quartzite.
These materials often overlap in color, but color alone does not make them equivalent. Crystal habit, internal structure, color mechanism, inclusions, and geological context all matter.
Amethyst: iron, irradiation, and purple quartz
What it is. Amethyst is the purple variety of macrocrystalline quartz, SiO2. Its color is connected to trace iron incorporated during growth and subsequent natural irradiation, which creates color centers in the quartz structure. The result can range from pale lilac and lavender through reddish purple, violet, and deep purple.
Discovery and sources. Amethyst has been used since antiquity and has no single modern discovery. Major deposits in Brazil and Uruguay transformed it from a historically rare luxury gem into an accessible collector and jewelry material. Zambia, Namibia, Madagascar, Mexico, the United States, and other regions also produce distinctive material.
Overlapping appearances. Amethyst may show straight, angular, or chevron color zoning. Pale zones can look pinkish or lavender, while smoky color may overlap with purple in the same crystal. Ametrine is quartz containing both amethyst and citrine color zones; it is not simply any mixed purple and yellow quartz.
Rarity and value. Commercial amethyst is abundant, but fine specimens remain selective. Value rises with saturated but not opaque color, attractive red or blue flashes, transparency, even or aesthetically patterned zoning, strong luster, undamaged crystal form, associated minerals, and verified locality. Large geodes are not automatically high grade if the crystals are pale, chipped, repaired, or artificially colored.
Quality assessment. Examine the piece in neutral light. Check color distribution, transparency, termination quality, matrix stability, repairs, and whether the material has been heated, dyed, coated, or assembled. Heat can alter amethyst toward yellow, brown, green, or colorless tones depending on the material; prolonged heat or intense light can also reduce color in some specimens.
Lavender quartz: a useful color description with an uncertain boundary
“Lavender quartz” is usually a descriptive trade term, not a separate mineral species. It may refer to pale amethyst, pink-violet massive quartz, quartz colored by fine inclusions, or material positioned between conventional amethyst and rose quartz.
Rarity and value. The word “lavender” does not establish rarity. Value should follow the actual material: crystal habit, transparency, evenness and stability of color, inclusions, polish, condition, treatment, and origin. A well-formed pale amethyst crystal can be accurately described as pale lavender amethyst; a massive cloudy carving may require a different identification.
Quality assessment. Ask whether the material is macrocrystalline amethyst, massive rose quartz, chalcedony, or another quartz-rich material. Without testing, the safest label pairs the visual color with the most defensible mineral identity rather than treating “lavender quartz” as a guaranteed variety.
Rose quartz: massive pink quartz with a distinctive internal cause
What it is. Classic rose quartz is usually massive rather than formed as clear, well-terminated crystals. Its color ranges from nearly white blush to medium-dark pink. Research has linked the familiar cloudy pink color to microscopic aligned silicate fibers that are similar, but not identical, to dumortierite. Those inclusions also account for much of rose quartz’s characteristic translucency.
When the fibers are properly oriented and the material is cut as a cabochon or sphere, they can produce a six-rayed star. Transparent, well-formed pink quartz crystals exist, but they are exceptionally rare and have a different color mechanism from ordinary massive rose quartz.
Discovery and sources. Rose quartz has also been known since antiquity. Important modern sources include Brazil, Madagascar, India, and Sri Lanka. The material commonly occurs in pegmatites and some hydrothermal settings.
Rarity and value. Pale massive rose quartz is common. Strong, even pink color with good translucency becomes less common, especially in small clean pieces. Fine star rose quartz, transparent facetable material, and rare natural pink crystal clusters can be significantly more valuable.
Quality assessment. Look for an appealing natural pink, useful translucency, minimal gray or brown cast, good polish, structural stability, and—where present—a centered, sharp star. Color that is extremely uniform, surface-concentrated, or trapped in fractures may warrant testing for dye.
Purple rose quartz: an overlap in color, not a new species
“Purple rose quartz” usually describes massive rose quartz with violet, mauve, or purple-pink areas. It can be a practical retail description when the base material is genuinely rose quartz, but it is not a formally separate mineral species.
The color may reflect variation in microscopic inclusions, iron-bearing material, zoning, or an overlap with other quartz components. Appearance alone cannot prove the color mechanism. Sellers should avoid automatically calling every purple-pink massive stone amethyst, because amethyst is defined by its macrocrystalline quartz structure and iron-related purple coloration.
Value and quality. Judge saturation, pattern, translucency, polish, condition, and whether the purple-pink color is natural and stable. Attractive color contrast may add value, but the trade phrase itself does not establish rarity.
Pink amethyst: a documented new market variety from Patagonia
What it is. The best-studied material sold as pink amethyst comes from the El Choique mine in Patagonia, Argentina. These geodes contain pale pink quartz crystals whose color chemistry is related to the iron-based amethyst system; microscopic hematite can also contribute to the pink appearance. This is not the same material as ordinary massive rose quartz.
Discovery and market history. El Choique geodes first appeared commercially at a Brazilian gem fair in 2017. A 2020 mineralogical study described the material as a new pink color variety of quartz and supported “pink amethyst” as an appropriate descriptive name for those specimens.
Rarity and value. Pink amethyst is much more locality-specific than common amethyst, but “rare” should be used proportionally: the deposit has produced substantial material. Fine value is concentrated in attractive pink color, complete sparkling crystal coverage, intact geode shape, pleasing contrast with associated minerals, minimal damage, and documented Patagonian origin.
Quality assessment. Ask whether “pink amethyst” refers to documented El Choique-type crystal geodes or to a different pink-purple quartz-rich material. Crystal habit, host rock, color distribution, provenance, and treatment disclosure are more reliable than the name alone.
What is “pink amethyst flower agate”?
This commercial phrase can describe polished material that combines a pink-to-lavender quartz-rich appearance with the plume, orbicular, or blossom-like patterns associated with “flower agate.” It may also contain druzy cavities or zones of visible quartz crystals.
The key distinction: flower agate is itself a trade description for patterned chalcedony or agate, commonly with three-dimensional pale plumes in a translucent matrix. It is not automatically the same material as the crystalline pink amethyst geodes from El Choique. Some pieces sold as pink amethyst flower agate are better described as pink-to-lavender chalcedony/agate with floral inclusions and druzy quartz; others may contain macrocrystalline amethystine zones. Because these components can intergrow, a combined commercial name can be visually useful while remaining broader than a laboratory identification.
Origin and rarity. Commercial flower agate is strongly associated with Madagascar, while pink-purple agate and quartz material also reaches the market from Brazil and other sources. The name alone cannot establish country of origin. Dramatic, well-separated plumes, natural color, transparent depth, balanced druzy cavities, and clean finishing are more selective than the broad material category.
Quality assessment. Look for depth rather than a flat printed appearance, defined natural patterns, good translucency, stable cavities, an even polish, and no dye concentrated in cracks. Product descriptions should disclose the known origin and use “pink amethyst flower agate” as a trade name when full mineralogical testing has not separated every silica phase.
Hematoid quartz: quartz colored by iron-mineral inclusions
What it is. Hematoid quartz is quartz containing visible hematite or closely related iron-oxide inclusions. Colors can include red, rust, burgundy, orange, golden brown, and dark metallic tones. The inclusions may appear as clouds, flakes, needles, phantoms, or coatings trapped beneath later quartz growth.
“Fire quartz,” “red healer quartz,” and sometimes “harlequin quartz” are trade names that can overlap with hematoid material, but they do not guarantee a single inclusion mineral. Labels such as lepidocrocite or goethite should be used cautiously unless testing supports them.
Discovery and sources. Hematite-included quartz has been recognized for generations and has no single modern discovery. Brazil and Madagascar are major commercial sources, while notable included quartz occurs in many mineral districts worldwide.
Rarity and value. Common cloudy pieces are accessible. Fine value rises with transparent host quartz, distinct red or metallic inclusions, attractive phantom structure, balanced color, strong luster, intact form, and locality documentation. Inclusions that create composition and depth are more desirable than opaque, muddy material.
Quartzite: quartz-rich rock, not a quartz crystal variety
What it is. Quartzite is a hard quartz-rich rock, most commonly formed when quartz sandstone is metamorphosed by heat, pressure, and fluids. The original sand grains recrystallize into an interlocking fabric. Under the British Geological Survey classification, quartzite contains more than 80% quartz, with limited feldspar and other minerals.
Because quartzite is a rock, not one continuous quartz crystal, it should not be labeled as a quartz variety in the same sense as amethyst or smoky quartz. Pink, red, purple, green, or blue quartzites owe their colors and patterns to accessory minerals, iron oxides, mica, or other components.
Discovery and use. Quartzite is a long-established geological rock type rather than a recently discovered gem. Its durability makes it important in architecture, dimension stone, carving, and decorative objects.
Rarity and value. Quartzite is widespread. Decorative value depends on color, pattern, grain, polish, structural integrity, block size, and quarry source. In specimen form, unusual mineral associations or documented geology may matter more than translucency.
Quality assessment. Look for an interlocking granular texture, honest disclosure of fissures and resin treatments, a stable polish, and correct distinction from marble, sandstone, engineered quartz, and massive single-mineral quartz.

The collector’s rule
When purple and pink quartz names overlap, begin with structure and formation rather than color:
- Is it one visible macrocrystalline quartz crystal, a mass of quartz, fine-grained chalcedony/agate, or a quartz-rich rock?
- Is the color produced within the lattice, by microscopic fibers, by larger mineral inclusions, or by treatment?
- Does the name describe mineralogy, appearance, locality, or marketing?
- Is the claimed origin documented?
- Are treatments, repairs, coatings, dyes, or resin disclosed?
Good naming does not remove the beauty or individuality of a specimen. It makes that beauty easier to understand, compare, and value.
