Quartz is one of Earth’s most abundant minerals, yet it carries one of the most complicated naming systems in the crystal trade. A specimen may be named for its color, its inclusions, its growth history, its locality, or simply the visual story a seller sees inside it. Those names can overlap without describing different minerals.
This first part establishes the mineralogical foundation, then examines rock crystal, smoky quartz, phantom quartz, “glitter quartz,” garden quartz, and the trade term “Lemurian quartz.” Part 2 will focus on amethyst, rose quartz, pink amethyst, hematoid quartz, and quartzite.
Quartz at a glance
Quartz is crystalline silicon dioxide, SiO2. At ordinary surface temperatures it occurs as alpha quartz, built from linked silicon–oxygen tetrahedra. It has a Mohs hardness of 7, a specific gravity near 2.65, a vitreous luster, no true cleavage, and typically breaks with a curved or conchoidal fracture.
Well-formed crystals usually show a six-sided prismatic appearance capped by rhombohedral faces. Massive quartz has the same basic chemistry but does not display a single obvious external crystal form. Agate and chalcedony are also silica materials, but their very fine-grained structures and growth habits place them in a different descriptive group from ordinary macrocrystalline quartz.
Pure quartz is colorless. Color and pattern arise from trace elements, atomic-scale defects, natural irradiation, microscopic inclusions, larger included minerals, or combinations of these factors.
Why quartz names overlap
Quartz can carry several accurate descriptions at the same time. A crystal may be smoky because of its color, phantom because it preserves an earlier growth outline, and chlorite-included because chlorite marks that outline. A seller might then market the same specimen as garden quartz because the inclusions resemble a landscape.
The most useful naming order is:
- Mineral: quartz.
- Established variety or color: rock crystal, smoky quartz, amethyst, or rose quartz.
- Feature: phantom growth, rutile needles, hematite inclusions, chlorite, fluid inclusions, or surface striations.
- Locality: only when documented.
- Trade name: useful as a market descriptor, but not a substitute for mineral identity.
Rock crystal: colorless macrocrystalline quartz
What it is. Rock crystal is transparent, colorless macrocrystalline quartz. “Clear quartz” is the common retail wording; “rock crystal” is the traditional mineral and gem-material term.
Discovery and origin. Rock crystal has been carved, traded, and collected since antiquity, so it has no single modern discovery date. It forms in many geological settings, including hydrothermal veins, cavities, and pegmatites. Brazil, Madagascar, the Alps, Pakistan, and Arkansas are among the well-known commercial or collector sources, but locality should never be guessed from appearance alone.
Rarity and value. Quartz itself is common. What becomes uncommon is a large crystal with strong transparency, bright luster, balanced form, minimal damage, and reliable locality information. A small pristine crystal may be more desirable than a much larger piece with repaired tips, polished faces sold as natural, or heavy internal fracturing.
Quality assessment. Look for luster, termination quality, proportion, transparency appropriate to the specimen, visually interesting but honestly disclosed inclusions, and the absence of undisclosed repairs or coatings. Internal veils are natural features; they are not automatically defects, but they affect transparency and durability.
Smoky quartz: a spectrum, not one shade
What it is. Smoky quartz ranges from pale gray and tea brown through warm cognac, deep brown-gray, and nearly black. Very dark smoky quartz is traditionally called morion. Cairngorm refers historically to smoky quartz associated with Scotland’s Cairngorm region; it should not be used as a generic name for every brown quartz.
How the color forms. Aluminum can substitute for a small amount of silicon in the quartz lattice. Natural ionizing radiation from the surrounding geological environment can then create optically active color centers associated with those aluminum-related defects. The result is the smoky absorption seen through the crystal. The same mechanism can be produced or intensified by commercial irradiation, so dark color alone does not prove natural, untreated origin.
Discovery and sources. Like rock crystal, smoky quartz has been known for centuries rather than “discovered” at one modern moment. Important material occurs in Brazil, Madagascar, Switzerland, Scotland, the United States, and many other quartz-producing regions.
Rarity and value. Pale to medium smoky quartz is widely available. Collector value rises with natural-looking color, transparency, crystal form, size, associated minerals, verified locality, and lack of damage. Extremely dark material is not automatically better: if light cannot travel through it, the internal character and crystal zoning disappear. Artificially irradiated quartz remains real quartz, but the treatment should be disclosed.
Quality assessment. View the specimen in transmitted and reflected light. Check whether the tone is attractive and reasonably even, whether the crystal remains readable, and whether the base, tip, and edges are natural, repaired, or polished.
Phantom quartz: a record of interrupted growth
What it is. A phantom is not a separate quartz species. It is the visible outline of an earlier stage of crystal growth preserved inside later quartz. Growth slowed or stopped, a thin layer of another material settled on the crystal faces, and quartz growth resumed around it.
Chlorite, hematite, clay minerals, iron oxides, and other deposits may mark the earlier surface. Repeated pauses can produce nested phantoms. A smoky or amethyst color zone can also create a phantom-like outline without a thick layer of solid inclusions.
Rarity and value. Minor growth zoning is common, but crisp, centered, complete, and visually separated phantoms are less common. Value depends on the clarity of the host, contrast of the phantom, number and symmetry of outlines, overall aesthetics, condition, and locality. An ambiguous cloud should not command the same premium as a well-defined internal crystal silhouette.
“Glitter quartz”: describe the sparkle, not only the label
What it is. “Glitter quartz” has no single mineralogical definition. In the trade it may refer to quartz containing reflective mica, hematite, lepidocrocite-like iron oxides, or other plate-like inclusions. It may also be used loosely for material with aventurescence—the sparkling optical effect best known in aventurine quartz.
The label can therefore cover very different materials. It should not be confused with goldstone, a manufactured glass containing metallic crystals, or with quartz that has been coated to create an “aura” finish.
Rarity and value. Sparkle alone is not rare. Fine material has a natural, well-distributed optical effect, an attractive bodycolor, enough transparency to reveal the inclusions, and no undisclosed coating. A specific inclusion identification is more informative than the word “glitter.”
Garden quartz and lodolite: scenic included quartz
What it is. “Garden quartz,” “landscape quartz,” “scenic quartz,” and “lodolite” are descriptive trade names for transparent to translucent quartz whose internal inclusions resemble moss, foliage, clouds, earth, or miniature landscapes. They are not approved mineral species.
The inclusions may include chlorite, clays, iron oxides, hematite, feldspar, and fluid-filled cavities. Two pieces sold under the same trade name can therefore have different inclusion minerals and different geological histories.
Origin and naming. Brazil is especially associated with commercial garden quartz, while included quartz occurs worldwide. A trade name does not establish Brazilian origin, and visual resemblance cannot replace locality documentation or analytical identification of the inclusions.
Rarity and value. Included quartz is not rare as a broad category. Exceptional pieces are valued for a coherent three-dimensional “scene,” strong contrast, transparent viewing windows, depth, balanced cutting, and absence of distracting fractures. In this category, inclusions create value rather than reduce it.
“Lemurian quartz”: real quartz, commercial name
What it is. “Lemurian quartz” or “Lemurian seed quartz” is a modern trade and metaphysical name commonly applied to quartz points with pronounced horizontal growth striations on one or more prism faces. The striations are real crystal-growth features. “Lemurian,” however, is not a mineral species, chemical variety, or laboratory identification.
Origin and rarity. The name became associated with Brazilian quartz in the late twentieth-century crystal market and is now applied more broadly. Striations occur naturally on quartz from many places, so the label alone does not prove a specific mine or unusual rarity. Claims of ancient encoded records belong to spiritual interpretation, not mineralogy.
Quality assessment. Judge the specimen as quartz: crystal form, luster, condition, clarity, natural surface texture, color, associations, and documented origin. A premium may be reasonable for exceptional aesthetics or provenance, but not simply because the word “Lemurian” appears on a tag.

How to buy and label quartz accurately
- Start with the mineral name, then add color, inclusions, growth features, and locality.
- Ask whether smoky color is natural or artificially irradiated when treatment matters to the purchase.
- Do not accept a trade name as proof of rarity, mine, country, or metaphysical history.
- Evaluate condition in strong side lighting: repairs, glued tips, filled fractures, coatings, and polished faces should be disclosed.
- For high-value specimens, provenance and professional identification matter more than an imaginative label.
Final perspective
Quartz is scientifically simple in composition and remarkably complex in appearance. Its most informative names explain what changed: color centers in smoky quartz, preserved growth stages in phantoms, or visible mineral inclusions in garden quartz. Trade names can be useful shorthand, but the strongest descriptions remain transparent about what is mineralogy, what is locality, and what is marketing.
